The History of Community Action
Wednesday, April 17, 2024 from 9:30 AM to 10:30 AM
Joe Diamond and Kathy McDermott will take us through the broad strokes from the creation of Community Action Agencies in 1964 through the 60 years of work that have led to where we are today! This is a session they lead each year for the MTC’s Leadership Development Institute, and their combined experience and knowledge of Community Action adds a Massachusetts-specific lens to this history. This training will be a great opportunity for new and long-time staff alike!

Better Listening, Better Relationships: Tools & Practices for Effective Listening Skills
Tuesday, April 23, 2024 from 2:00 PM to 3:30 PM
This revitalized session from one of the MTC’s most popular trainers, Tom Ellis, will cover one of the most important professional (and personal) skills: effective listening. When we listen deeply and with focus, we can create the space where the possibility for healing, recovery, progress, and forward action is possible. In the daily bustle and mountain of responsibility experienced by those working in community action or other social services jobs, the concept of taking extra time for meetings, conversations, or coaching might seem impossible. However, through deep listening, intentional focus, and leaving the space for what needs to be discussed, you not only benefit your clients, but yourself. Additionally, we will review tools and practices for effective listening, and review how to know when to apply/utilize while serving others in our day-to-day work.
