MASSCAP Presents 2001 Awards, Elects New Leadership
The Award Recipients
On October 10, MASSCAP presented its annual Self-Sufficiency Awards at an event at the State House in Boston that drew more than 100 people from around Massachusetts.
The Self-Sufficiency Awards fall into several categories. This year's Achievement Awards, presented to clients and former clients of Community Action Agencies (CAAs) who have worked hard to become economically self-sufficient, went to three individuals. The awardees were: Alicia Cook of New Bedford; Deborah Clarke of Salem; and Mary Calderrone of Haverhill.
Another category of the awards is for Employee Excellence. These awards go to staff at Massachusetts CAAs who consistently have turned in outstanding performances in their jobs. The 2001 award recipients were: Jennifer "JC" Callahan of Community Action of Cape Cod and the Islands (CACCI); Maria Jenkins of Tri-City Community Action Program (Tri-CAP) in Malden; and Patricia Meagher of Community Action, Inc. in Haverhill.
MASSCAP also presented awards for Public Service. Those receiving these awards were: State Representative Christopher Fallon of Malden; State Senator Frederick Berry of Peabody; Ed Chase of the Massachusetts Housing Finance Agency; and the Commonwealth of Massachusetts' Division of Medical Assistance.
Also, MASSCAP made an award for Outstanding Organizational Partnership to Citizens Energy which was accepted by the organization's Chairman and former U.S. Congressman, Joseph P. Kennedy.
Finally, MASSCAP initiated an annual award for achievement in the area of Advocacy. It named the late Dick Bigos, the longtime director of Community Action of Cape Cod and the Islands, to be the first recipient of this award for outstanding advocacy efforts. His son Dan accepted the award on behalf of the Bigos family at the October 10 event. From now on, MASSCAP will honor a deserving person or organization each year with this award, which will be called the Dick Bigos Award for Advocacy, in honor of its first recipient.
The gathering was hosted by State Representative James Fagan and outgoing MASSCAP President Bruce Morell.
